In March, Geneva-born Swiss-Algerian artist Nadia Merzoug took over the exhibition space at La Collective to present her work on the representation of women in the film industry, and by extension in society.
The impetus for this series of works came from reading the novel Trois femmes disparaissent by Hélène Frappat, about the way in which three actresses from the same family have been treated and abused by the industry from one generation to the next. This reflection led her to work on a series of film noir images, reinterpreting them in pop colours and silk-screening them, adding words and texts according to the images.
At the same time, she is also working on a series of blurred images of women taken from aesthetic fashion photos, which are superimposed, creating a series of highly observed cyanotypes. This series speaks of the evaporation of women after they have disappeared, like the fact that women disappear from the landscape after a certain date, as if they were evaporating.
